Welcome to
The Shoals Backyard
Welcome to The Shoals Backyard -- where our passion for nature is as vast as the beautiful outdoors we're dedicated to preserving. We are not just lovers of the environment, but active stewards of our local wild areas, ensuring they remain clean and vibrant for generations to come. Through our clean-ups, we aim to restore the pristine beauty of our trails, creeks, forests, and more, promoting a culture of responsibility and appreciation for our natural world.

My name is Will Wiggins
I graduated from the University of North Alabama with a Bachelor’s in IT, but my true passion has always been the great outdoors. These days, you’ll find me hiking, kayaking, or soaking up as much knowledge as I can about the natural world. I’m currently exploring options to go back to school for Ecology or Environmentalism, and I’m actively enrolled in the Alabama Master Naturalist program through Auburn University. I’m also proud to serve on the Board of Directors for Keep the Shoals Beautiful, where I get to help protect and preserve the beauty of our local environment. Nature is my classroom, and I’m always eager to learn more!

My name is Kelsey Brand
Hi, I’m Kelsey, a co-founder of The Shoals Backyard and a passionate advocate for the natural world! I currently work with national conservation organizations and am finishing up a contract at Shiloh Military Park. Soon, I’ll be heading out on a cross-country adventure to work in Katmai National Park in King Salmon, Alaska, for most of 2025—a dream come true! When I’m not working, I'll probably be kayaking, hiking, or simply enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. I graduated from the University of North Alabama with a Bachelor’s in Biology, and I’ve also had the privilege of serving on the Board of Directors for Keep the Shoals Beautiful. Nature has always been my greatest inspiration, and I’m excited to continue exploring, learning, and protecting it wherever life takes me!

Our Story
At The Shoals Backyard, our passion for the great outdoors drives everything we do. We are committed to preserving and protecting the natural beauty of The Shoals, and really all of Northwest Alabama, for future generations, while also fostering a deeper connection between people and the environment. Our mission is to showcase the incredible landscapes, wildlife, and ecosystems of our region, and to inspire others to join us in keeping it clean, thriving, and full of life. Education—both for ourselves and others—is at the heart of what we do. We believe that learning about the natural world is the first step toward caring for it. So, come join us as we explore, discover, and work together to make a difference in The Shoals and beyond!
